KPTZ’s 2012 Commemorative T-Shirt
Our 2012 t-shirt was designed by local artist and KPTZ volunteer Tom Booth. It commemorates KPTZ being honored as this year’s Rhody Parade Grand Marshal and all of the volunteers at KPTZ who have made our first year on the air a success!
If you have volunteered at KPTZ, we invite you to march in the parade with us on Saturday, May 19. We will gather at the Fire Hall on Lawrence Street on or before 12:30 p.m. The parade starts at 1:00 p.m. Have fun with your “electic, authentic” attire, but wear comfortable shoes or boots. The route is about a mile and the parade through town will last about an hour. Contact our volunteer coordinator to RSVP you’ll be joining the procession at [email protected]. Drop by the station to get your limited edition t-shirt (discounted for those marching in the parade). T-shirt colors are blue, sand and pistachio green.
KPTZ’s First Birthday
May 5 – Celebrate, Celebrate, Dance to the Music!
On May 14 of last year, KPTZ began broadcasting from its studio at Mountain View Commons. Suddenly we heard what all the work and planning had produced. We celebrated with a launch party, attended by so many of you, an evening of fun and celebration!
The closest we can come to celebrating our First Anniversary is the night of May 5 — a big day in Mexico and this year, a big day in Port Townsend. We’ve reserved the Oscar Erikson Building at the Fairgrounds, signed up two great local bands, brought out our DJs and turntables for some interim sounds, and we’re going to have a party!
We’ll start at 7 p.m. so families can come and have some fun and we’ll go until 11ish so dancers have lots of opportunity to kick up their heels. Along the way, we’ve planned a dance contest and there will be lots of great door prizes donated by local businesses.
Four local teachers have agreed to judge the dance contests — one will be Swing and then a second competition, Solo dancing that we describe as “Wiggle.” Janice Eklund, Karl Sebastian, Jan Burr, and Ling hui O’Connor will pick the best dancers. You don’t need to bring a partner. We will fix you up with someone, if you want to Swing.
There will be food – donated by Candace, Anka, and Pain D’Amore and the Food Co-op. There will be wine and beer and cider and soft drinks for sale. Coffee donated by Sunrise.
Lost in the Shuffle will be the band to start off the evening. The Pitfalls come on later.

It promises to be a great evening. We hope you will join us in celebrating a year of community radio bringing you news, music, and public affairs. It wouldn’t have happened without you!
KPTZ’s First Anniversary Ribbon Cutting Ceremony May 14
Please join all of us here at KPTZ and Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors on Monday, May 14, at 3:00 p.m. to celebrate our First Anniversary!
Following the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony officiated by Board President Colin Foden, joined by other founders and board members, station manager and other volunteers, we invite you to our Open House. Birthday cake and refreshments will be served.
We are located at 1925 Blaine Street, Suite 200, at Mountain View Commons. Please note: with the library temporary relocated here parking is limited, but you can park along the street if the lot is full.
Meet our New Volunteer Coordinator!
We are happy to introduce Lee Erickson as KPTZ’s new Volunteer Coordinator. Recently moving to Port Townsend from Oregon, Lee has an extensive background in many capacities including management, non-profit, business owner, community group leader and more. Lee has been able to bring people together, both encouraging their unique talents while working towards a common goal.

DJ Spotlight: Seth Raymond

KPTZ DJ Seth Raymond ruminates on cheap burritos, CCR, and pounding on the drums. See what else he has to say as you get to know a DJ. . .
What can listeners expect to hear on your show? I try to mix it up as best I can, but you will certainly hear some catchy rock n’ roll tunes. I love finding a song that has a certain quality. That good, honest quality that gets you moving, or breaks your heart, whatever the artist really intended. When a song really nails that, then it doesn’t matter what genre it is, it just works for me. You’ll just have to tune in and check it out.
Do you play music yourself? Not a lot at the moment, but over the years I have played in several bands. Guitar mostly, but I have played bass for a couple of projects, and I love to pound on the drums when ever I get the chance. Not much in life feels quite as good as finding a groove and banging out a beat. That said, I’m really not a very good drummer.
If you could have one super power, what would it be? Shape shifter.
What’s your favorite local spot? I grew up running around in the bunkers and there is still something satisfying about running around up there. Nostalgic maybe. The bunkers really haven’t changed much over the years and I love that. Hats off to the Uptown Pub though. I’ve been frequenting that burrito stand up at the gas station too. Not bad.
Who would be your ideal radio guest? Mike Watt of the minutemen. Or maybe Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. Hard to pick just one. I have yet to do a real interview on my show, but both of those musicians seem like people that I could really chill with. Have them up to the station and then have them over for dinner, you know what I mean?
Top three pastimes: Listening to music seems a bit too obvious here so I’ll skip that. I bought a boat a couple of years ago. That has to count as two right there: sailing the boat and fiddling around with the boat. I love partaking in a killer BBQ. Hanging out with friends and eating good food. That’s defiantly a favorite pastimes. It’s winter, so I should say reading books and taking baths, things like that, but I can’t. I really miss summer.
What is the last thing you regretted playing on your show? I played that Credence Clearwater Revival song Don’t Look Now. I messed up and somehow cut the first few bars out of the song. I don’t regret trying to play the song–I love that song–but I regret playing it and messing it up. It would have been a sweet transition from the last song too. I blew it.
What song do you wish you could play on your show every time? Oh, there is no way that I can pick just one. I could pick about five Kinks songs and be happy playing them week after week (and I do actually). There is a song by The Nerves called When You Find Out that I’m in love with right now. Or there’s I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight by Richard and Linda Thompson. That song really got under my skin in the best kind of way. I’ll stop there.
What is the last piece of music you listened to? Fleetwood Mac–The Chain.

May 14: Broadcasting Begins 8 AM, Celebrating Begins 8 PM!
On Saturday, May 14 2011, KPTZ invites all Jefferson & Clallam County community, family and friends to join in a night of festivities and merriment. Celebrate Radio Port Townsend’s long-anticipated entree onto the airwaves.
From 8 am that very morning, on 91.9 FM, KPTZ will begin formal broadcasting that reaches from Port Angeles and Sequim, to Port Townsend, Chimacum and Quilcene. Even places like Port Ludlow and areas like Queen Ann in Seattle may get clear reception. The morning’s radio schedule will repeat from 2 pm to 8 pm. Check out our weekend’s programming schedule.
Launch Party
Then at 8 pm until midnight, KPTZ’s Launch Party and Fundraiser takes over at the NW Maritime Center, 431 Water Street, to celebrate.
Launch Party Entertainment
The Launch Party’s musical entertainment includes Port Townsend’s very own Solvents.
As Seattle Weekly said March 30, “With their classic-rock leanings, Solvents have more balls to their sound than many bands with more buzz.”
Also performing: the Crow Quill Night Owls jug band, and DJs Caleb Peacock and Ruby Fitch with The Party Club.
This is an all-ages party meant for dancing.
We will also have a special “Audio Booth,” where you can record your very own KPTZ station ID, special messages for the new station and have interviews conducted by KPTZ field reporters!
Tickets
Don’t miss this historic occasion. KPTZ suggests that guests contribute a $25 donation and kids 12 and under are free. But everyone is welcome to join the fun. Tickets are available for purchase at Brown Paper Tickets online as well as locally from Quimper Sound, the Food Co-Op and at the door starting at 7 pm.
Food
Light food will be prepared by Lil This, Lil That Catering thanks to the generous donations of many local eateries including (but not limited to!) Pane d’Amore, The Silverwater, The Fountain Cafe, Perfect Endings Cupcakes, Bob’s Bagels, and Candace Uptown Catering. A no-host bar will include beer from Port Townsend Brewery and a selection of regional wines from The Wine Seller. The gorgeous waterfront views of the NW Maritime Center will be complemented by the artful decorations and banners of Peter Gritt.
Max Grover Launch Party Poster
Prints of the Max Grover launch party poster will be available for purchase at the Launch Party. Additionally there will be a drawing for a pair of tickets to see Garrison Keillor and A Prairie Home Companion live at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville on June 11th. The winner will be announced at the launch party. The drawing is now closed.
At the party there will be opportunities to purchase limited edition, signed Max Grover posters as well as KPTZ’s first ever T-shirt, with the design based on Max’s painting in his new, evolving style and other special items.

Blues Journey / Taylor Clark
Each week, Taylor Clark retreats to his Island Fortress of Solitude on Whidbey where he carefully selects and reviews the soulful music he needs for Blues Journey, heard each Thursday afternoon from 1 to 3pm on KPTZ. While the music is picked with a critical ear, Taylor loves the process of live radio, particularly the moment after the mike is opened and before the music ends. He says he never knows what’s going to happen. Taylor tries to share not only the music he loves, but also something about the Blues Journey of Solace. Tune in and join the Journey. Email Taylor.

Larry says, “I’ve been making public radio for almost 30 years, and it has never been as much fun as at KPTZ. Mostly I’ve been an interviewer, trainer and producer of information/arts/performance/news programming. Before KPTZ I never had the opportunity to play music for our listeners. Now I’m hooked.
“I absorbed the “eclectic” style from the master, Tom Schnabel, host of Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW in Santa Monica. His program was the soundtrack for the morning in the LA area and introduced many of the world artists we still hear on KPTZ. Thanks Tom!
